S&P 500 daily regime, 2026-10-22
Regime: Higher-timeframe range with a short-term bearish correction. The rebound from 7631.42 remains intact on D1, but momentum weakened after rejection below 7771.61. The reference price is 7722.17, from the M5 close at 2026-10-22 00:00 UTC.
Structure
The latest completed W1 candle reversed sharply from 7839.17 and closed at 7657.87, near its lower end. That followed the failed extension through the previous 7817.30 and 7793.69 highs. Observation: completed weekly price remains inside the wider 7507.02 to 7845.02 range. Inference: the weekly advance has lost momentum, but 7631.42 and 7507.02 would need to give way before the larger structure becomes decisively bearish.
D1 has recovered for three consecutive completed sessions, closing 7698.27, 7743.42 and 7759.56 after the 7631.42 low. Wednesday reached 7771.61 but couldn't hold the upper part of the session's range. The subsequent move to 7722.17 has erased most of that final daily advance. This leaves the recovery valid above 7631.42, though currently under pressure below 7759.56 to 7771.61.
H4 and H1 condition
H4 recovered strongly from 7646.53 on Monday, then advanced through 7750.47 and reached 7771.61 on Wednesday. The latest completed H4 candle closed at 7759.56 after rejecting from that high. Inference: H4 is a rebound inside the broader correction, not a confirmed return to the prior uptrend while price remains below 7815.25 and 7839.17 to 7845.02.
H1 has turned down. After reaching 7771.61, price fell to 7745.80, recovered to 7766.11, then sold off again. The final two completed H1 candles dropped from 7758.79 to 7735.42 and then to 7722.17. The earlier 7731.11 support has already broken, so it now belongs to the resistance area rather than the list of possible downside triggers.
Latest M5 development
During the final completed H1 candle, M5 price moved through 7732, 7728 and 7725, printed 7721.17, and closed at 7722.17. Selling remained orderly, with lower highs and only shallow rebounds. No M5 candle completed after the latest H1 close at 2026-10-22 00:00 UTC.
Levels and scenarios
-
Bearish continuation: The break below 7731.11 has already occurred. Holding below 7735.42 to 7742.42 keeps pressure on 7717.11 and 7711.11. A completed break below 7711.11 would expose 7695.11, then 7684.42 to 7663.72. The stronger D1 support is 7631.42.
-
Stabilisation: Holding 7711.11 to 7717.11 and reclaiming 7735.42 would suggest the overnight decline is pausing. Price would still face 7742.42, 7758.79 and 7771.61 before the rebound regains control.
-
Bullish continuation: Acceptance above 7771.61 would reopen 7815.25, followed by 7839.17 to 7845.02. Until that happens, strength remains a recovery within a damaged weekly range.
Event risk
2026-10-22 at 12:30 UTC: US Initial Jobless Claims, high importance. The release can disturb any structure around 7711 to 7772, so a level touch near the event carries less confirmation than a completed close and hold afterward.

Session Card
Day type: range | Lean: bearish below 7735.42 | Lead scenario: rebound rejection, 45% | Key invalidation: 7742.42 | Reference: 7732.42, M5 close at 2026-10-22 00:10 UTC
What changed
The 7731.11 support break is complete and must now be treated as an observed development. The final completed H1 candle fell from 7735.67 to 7722.17, with a 7721.17 low, after the preceding H1 decline from 7758.79. That left an orderly sequence of lower highs and shallow rebounds.
Since that H1 close, two completed M5 candles have lifted price from 7722.17 to 7732.42. This rebound reclaimed 7731.11, but it hasn't recovered 7735.42 or the 7742.42 breakdown area. The immediate picture has therefore shifted from clean continuation to a test of former support from below. Sellers retain the advantage if the rebound fails under 7735.42 to 7742.42. Acceptance above 7742.42 would show that the latest breakdown is losing control.
The selected October 19 case supports patience when price is rotating around a decision area, but it was a whole-day range account with no scheduled catalyst. The current Asia phase begins after a confirmed H1 selloff, and the US event lies outside this window. The past mistake to avoid is calling a range outcome actionable without a completed edge failure. Here, neither the M5 rebound nor a renewed selloff should be anticipated before its stated trigger closes and holds.
Scenario Map
| Scenario | Prob | Trigger | Path & target | Invalidation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebound rejects from former support | 45% | Price tests 7735.42 to 7742.42, then an M5 candle closes below 7731.11 and the next rebound remains below 7735.42 | Return to 7721.17, then 7717.11 and 7711.11 | An M5 close above 7742.42 followed by a higher low above 7735.42 |
| Stabilisation above 7735.42 | 35% | An M5 candle closes above 7735.42 and a retest holds at or above 7731.11 | Target 7742.42, then 7758.79 | An M5 close below 7721.17 after the reclaim |
| Direct downside continuation | 20% | An M5 candle closes below 7721.17 and a rebound fails beneath 7725.17 | Target 7717.11, then 7711.11 and 7695.11 | An M5 close above 7735.42 |
Key Levels
- 7758.79: Origin of the latest completed H1 decline and the upper target if Asia repairs the breakdown.
- 7742.42: Main bearish invalidation and the top of the immediate resistance area.
- 7735.42: Latest H1 breakdown close and first meaningful reclaim test.
- 7731.11: Former support, briefly reclaimed by the completed M5 rebound. Its next hold or failure should define the first tradable sequence.
- 7721.17: Latest H1 and overnight low. A completed break is required before treating downside continuation as active again.
- 7717.11 to 7711.11: First support zone below the overnight low.
- 7695.11: Lower target only after acceptance below 7711.11.
Session Map
- 00:00 to 01:00 UTC: Judge whether the two-candle M5 rebound can hold 7731.11 and close above 7735.42. A touch alone doesn't confirm stabilisation.
- 01:00 to 04:00 UTC: Favor the lead branch only after a failed test of 7735.42 to 7742.42 and a completed close back below 7731.11. If price holds between 7731.11 and 7735.42, wait.
- 04:00 to 07:00 UTC: Treat acceptance above 7742.42 as an Asia repair toward 7758.79. Below 7721.17, require a failed rebound before targeting 7717.11 and 7711.11.
No scheduled high-importance event falls inside the 00:00 to 07:00 UTC Asia window. The 12:30 UTC US release is outside this preparation phase.
No-Trade Conditions
- No trade while completed M5 candles remain trapped between 7731.11 and 7735.42.
- Don't short the already-completed 7731.11 break without either a rejection sequence from 7735.42 to 7742.42 or a fresh close below 7721.17.
- Don't buy the current rebound unless 7735.42 closes and holds on M5.
- Stand aside if price crosses 7731.11 repeatedly without holding either side, or if a breakout candle reaches its first target before a retest offers defined risk.
What to Watch — Invalidation
The bearish Asia lean is invalidated by an M5 close above 7742.42 followed by a higher low that holds above 7735.42. That would shift the phase toward repair into 7758.79, without changing the accepted daily regime. A close below 7721.17 would instead end the current stabilisation attempt, but downside still needs a failed rebound beneath 7725.17 before continuation is confirmed.

The confirmed D1 candle opened at 7,648.89, reached 7,731.32, fell no lower than 7,646.53 and closed at 7,698.27. Most of that net rise occurred before the preparation's reference point. From the 7,698.02 reference, the index finished only 0.25 points higher after the active session rotated around 7,698.17 and held both decision edges. The preparation's day type, Neutral / Wait lean and 38% lead branch all matched the session.” Lesson from that review: “The session unfolded within the expected parameters. No material surprises. The decision band held, the midpoint kept pulling price back, and the absence of a scheduled catalyst left the cash open to confirm rotation rather than force a directional repricing. 1.
